Inpatient Palliative Care

If you’ve been admitted to our hospital, you can request a consultation from one of our Palliative Care Teams at any time. A Palliative Care Consultant will work closely with the health care team on your unit to care for your pain and symptom management needs.

We also provide Inpatient Palliative Care in our hospital for patients who may have been transferred to us from other areas of Lakeridge Health, or directly from the community.

Some families come to us for support with symptom management with the intention of returning home. Others will require end of life care.

At any time, should someone choose to go home or to another destination, we will support that decision and provide assistance needed to help make the transition.

While you are in our care, your personal, cultural and faith values will be respected at all times.

We offer Inpatient Palliative Care in the Supportive Care Unit at our Oshawa site; in the Complex Continuing Care Unit at our Bowmanville site; and in the Medical/Surgical Unit at our Port Perry site.

Is Palliative Care Right For You?

Our patients are adults (18 years and older) who usually have a life expectancy of three months or less, and have an agreed upon do-not-attempt-resuscitation (DNAR) order.

What You Can Expect During Your Stay

An entire care team will be here for you, that includes: a physician, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation assistants, registered dietitians, a social worker, pharmacists, recreation therapist and chaplain as desired.

Who Can Visit You?

Anyone.  We know that you want your family around you, and we welcome them.  Our new Allison Halls Children's Playroom at our Oshawa site provides a safe, entertaining space for kids so that the whole family can enjoy quality time together.
