Earlier this week, the founder of Lakeridge Health’s Pinewood Centre, the late Dr. George Blake, was honoured by Oshawa City Council.

Council approved dedication of the Dr. George Blake Parkette. The parkette is located at Royal Street, about a block away from the Pinewood Centre location at 300 Centre Street in Oshawa.

Dr. Blake’s tireless efforts and advocacy led to the opening of the original Pinewood Centre in Oshawa. Today, there are 13 Pinewood Centre locations across the Central East LHIN in Scarborough and throughout Durham Region.

Pinewood Centre is an important part of the Lakeridge Health system and supports people living with mental health conditions and addictions.

To honour his work and his contribution to the community, Lakeridge Health announced in June 2018 that it would unveil an onsite tribute to Dr. Blake at Pinewood Centre.

In addition, in honour of Dr. Blake’s contributions and his strong support and advocacy in support of higher education and in recognition of the United Nations International Decade of People of African Descent (2015-2024), a mentorship program for youth of African-Canadian descent will be established in Dr. Blake’s honour.

Lakeridge Health is working with Dr. Blake’s family and partners to finalize the tributes and expects a public event this coming Spring.
