Asbestos remediation to be complete by early November

Durham Region— Reconstruction efforts continue at Port Perry Hospital with construction experts on site every day. Restoration efforts include asbestos abatement and mold remediation, which are expected to be complete by early November. Once finished, experts will be able to fully assess the damage to the hospital.

A team of about 80 workers are on daily to prepare the site for full restoration of mechanical and electrical infrastructure and restoration of the sections of the hospital damaged in a fire on August. North Durham residents can see the progress made to date in a video released today by Lakeridge Health.

“Lakeridge Health has been working hard to ensure Port Perry Hospital is safely and efficiently repaired and restored. This includes electrical demolition work and rooftop repairs, to ensure the hospital is not susceptible to leaks or further damage as we head into the winter months,” said Matthew Anderson, President and CEO of Lakeridge Health. “While it is expected construction will be underway until Spring/Summer of 2018, Port Perry Hospital will reopen with new and more modern facilities than ever before.”

A detailed timeline for reopening isn’t expected until at earliest the end of November.

“We would like to thank North Durham residents and community members for their patience and understanding during the temporary closure. In the meantime, we are leveraging our resources as we work as a regional acute care system, where Lakeridge Health is better positioned to respond quickly and effectively to our patients accessing care across Durham Region,” said Anderson.
