Durham Region – On Saturday morning, physicians, nurses and other health professionals from across Durham Region gathered at Ajax Pickering Hospital to learn about an innovative model that is shortening wait times and improving care for people suffering from common shoulder injuries and conditions. The model is centred around providing the best patient experience through novel partnerships between community providers and The Shoulder Centre’s clinical team based at Ajax Pickering Hospital.
“Durham Region is one of Ontario’s fastest growing communities and strong partnerships between Lakeridge Health specialists and physicians and other providers in the community are the key to meeting increasing health care needs,” said Matthew Anderson, Lakeridge Health President and CEO. “This is an outstanding example of an innovative model that is transforming care in Durham Region.”
The educational event highlighted how the innovative model at Lakeridge Health is helping people receive quicker access to specialized surgical and non-surgical shoulder treatments, close to home. Shoulder conditions such as arthritis, rotator cuff and frozen shoulder cause significant disability, while shoulder pain is among the most common complaints Ontario patients present to their primary care practitioners.
“I am excited about these partnerships and their impact on communities,” said Dr. Mark Adams, Port Perry family physician. “Bringing health care practitioners from hospitals and primary care together to share their knowledge helps to ensure we are all working together towards a common goal of improving the quality of care and increasing access to services close to home for all residents of Durham Region.”
“We are seeing the results of an innovative model of care that has enabled patients requiring shoulder care at The Shoulder Centre at Ajax Pickering Hospital to not only receive value based care, but also quicker access to an accurate diagnosis and management, right in their own community,” said Dr. Stephen Gallay, Ajax Pickering Hospital Chief of Surgery and co-founder of the integrated regional shoulder surgery model. “We would like to spread this success to other health services and this type of knowledge-sharing event is key to doing so.”
So far, over 100 physicians across Durham Region have partnered with The Shoulder Centre. The event was part of a Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care project to increase access to vital services in Durham Region.
