Lakeridge Health acknowledges quick actions and dedication of Port Perry Hospital team during August 25, 2017 fire.

North Durham – Lakeridge Health held a special recognition event this week to honour the staff, physicians and volunteers who sprang into action to ensure the safety and well-being of patients, family members, visitors and one another on August 25, the night of the Port Perry Hospital fire.

The event took place Thursday, October 26 at Port Perry United Church and recognized the Port Perry Hospital team for their admirable performance and actions to keep patients and families safe and to express appreciation to all Lakeridge Health team members who have provided their support since the temporary closure of services at Port Perry Hospital.

“In a defining moment of excellence, the Port Perry Hospital team has given life to our values as an organization,” Lakeridge Health Board Chair Valentine Lovekin told the Port Perry team. “Compassion, Innovation, Courage and Trust – you demonstrated these values the night of the fire, and every day since, as you continue to provide safe, quality care to all patients throughout Durham Region.”

Lakeridge Health President and CEO Matthew Anderson also acknowledged community partners, the Township of Scugog, Scugog Fire and Emergency Services, Durham and York Region Paramedic Services and Medical Associates of Port Perry for their support since the temporary closure of Port Perry Hospital.

“I’m proud to say our other Lakeridge Health hospitals have been very welcoming and trying to make our Port Perry team as at home as possible. But as you all know, it is not home. Home is the Port Perry Hospital,” Anderson added. ”Until we get them back there, our Port Perry team members are still heroes. They’re still doing things and reaching to a level to support our patients and our community. That makes them heroes until we reopen the hospital and every day after that.”
