Families visiting a loved one in the supportive care unit at Lakeridge Health Oshawa will find it easier to bring children along, thanks to a generous donation from Leslie Bissett.

The Allison Halls Children’s Playroom is now open on the hospital’s fourth floor. It’s a bright and cheerful space with a large window, a colourful mural and lots of toys for children – including board games, a train table and a PlayStation. The playroom is adjacent to the supportive care unit, which provides palliative care.

“Children have such active minds and bodies. Even though they love visiting, it’s not in their nature to sit still for very long,” says Debbie Galet, Director, Post-Acute Specialty Services, Lakeridge Health. “Now we have an environment where families can visit, interact and make memories together, all while staying on the unit.”

Leslie developed the idea for a playroom when her sister, Allison Halls, was receiving end-of-life care in the supportive care unit. Watching Allison’s young grandchildren, they realized a space for kids would make a real difference for families. The new room is called the Allison Halls Children’s Playroom in her memory.

“We are so thankful for the support Allison and our family received during this tough time,” says Leslie Bissett. “Knowing how difficult the experience is, we wanted to do something to help other families going through the same thing.”

In addition to the playroom, Leslie Bissett’s donation has purchased a blanket warmer for the supportive care unit. Her total donation to the Lakeridge Health Foundation is over $26,000.

“We’re so appreciative of these wonderful gifts from Leslie Bissett,” said Bob Baker, CEO, Lakeridge Health Foundation. “It’s a beautiful tribute to Allison that will bring comfort to families for many years to come.”
