Oshawa – Dr. Randy Wax has been named Regional Director of Clinical Education, where he’ll oversee the training of more than 240 medical students and residents from Queen’s University each year at Lakeridge Health.

“Dr. Wax is recognized as a provincial leader in Critical Care and Medical Education and has been a major driving force behind our Academic Mission and the growth of our cutting-edge LHEARN Centre,” said Barry Guppy, VP of Medical and Academic Affairs at Lakeridge Health. “Randy is extremely passionate about teaching and has devoted much of his career to generously sharing his knowledge and expertise with others. I can think of no one more suited to helping us take this next step forward in our strong partnership with Queen’s University.”

As Regional Director of Clinical Education, Dr. Wax will lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development education programs of Queen’s University Faculty of Health Sciences at Lakeridge Health. This includes the development of a new comprehensive clinical clerkship program where some of Queen’s University medical students in their last year of training will complete their entire clinical training at Lakeridge Health.  This builds on our strength of integrating community resources with existing education programs.

“The Queen’s School of Medicine’s strategic plan specifically points to the importance of strong and lasting partnerships between Queen’s and community teaching hospitals,” said Dr. Richard Reznick, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University. “The Queen’s-Lakeridge partnership is a shining example of this strategy in action, and with the help of Dr. Wax’s talent and vision for the future, I am very much looking forward to fortifying and intensifying this important relationship.”

Approximately 70% of all medical learners from Queen’s University receive their training at Lakeridge Health. The LHEARN Centre is also the academic home in Durham Region to Queen’s Family Medicine Program, helping train eight new residents each year in Bowmanville, Oshawa and Port Perry.

"I am honored to be selected for this new joint leadership role with Queen's University and Lakeridge Health.  We are proud to share our excellent clinical learning experiences with students from Queen's University,” said Dr. Wax.  “Enhancing our academic activity will help Lakeridge Health remain on the cutting edge of health care delivery for Durham Region, and will help our communities recruit the best and brightest clinicians of the future. With a team of more than 90 Queen’s clinical teachers here at Lakeridge Health, we have the local talent to provide world-class medical education.”
