Port Perry Hospital Restoration Expected to Extend into Spring/Summer of 2018

Posted on Thursday August 31, 2017

Port Perry Hospital will be restored and reopened as soon as possible.

Durham – Work is underway at Port Perry Hospital as Lakeridge Health begins to develop the plan to rebuild and reopen the facility damaged in a fire on August 25.

External engineering, construction, insurance and electrical experts along with Hospital Operations staff have been on site to review, assess and establish options for hospital restoration. The initial report has determined most building systems including the electrical, mechanical and environmental systems were heavily damaged.

Based on the expert review, a preliminary construction timeframe to restore the building puts the restoration work extending into at least late Spring/early Summer 2018. That timeframe and a committed re-opening date will become definitive over the coming months as the detailed construction plan is developed.

In the coming days, construction equipment will arrive onsite to remove parts of the building damaged by the fire. Removing the damaged section will make way for the rebuild of Port Perry Hospital to begin. Lakeridge Health will reopen the site once restoration of the hospital is complete.

“The closure is disappointing to us and the North Durham community who rely on services close to home,” says Matthew Anderson, Lakeridge Health President and CEO. “Restoring and reopening our Port Perry Hospital is a top priority for Lakeridge Health.”

Lakeridge Health is working with construction, municipal, provincial and health system partners to safely revitalize the hospital - which remains critical to health care delivery in the Region.

Due to the complex nature of running a hospital including supporting operating rooms, medical equipment and medical gases needed to safely support patient care, restoring the site will be a significant undertaking.

Planning is underway to ensure access for the community, including working collaboratively with local physicians and partners to allow for surgeries, diagnostic tests and other procedures to occur as planned. Clinical staff and doctors from Port Perry Hospital will continue to support patients at other hospitals within our regional system in order to provide safe, quality care.

A toll-free information line (1-833-681-9840) has also been set up to help support North Durham patients, families and Health Service Partners to allow for quick, streamlined access to important health information relating to cancelled or postponed appointments.
