Lakeridge Health’s Long-Term Care Home Marks One Year Since Opening in March 2022

DURHAM REGION – Lakeridge Health’s long-term care home, Lakeridge Gardens, is marking one year since its opening in March 2022, providing much-needed and anticipated long-term care services close to home for the people of Durham Region.

“What an incredible 12 months it has been,” said Lisa McVety, Administrative Director, Lakeridge Gardens. “Over the last year, we have not only welcomed 320 residents and their families to this home, but also shared in making memories and helped to support them through some of their major life transitions.”

First announced in July 2020 as part of the Ministry of Long-Term Care’s Accelerated Build Pilot Program, construction of Lakeridge Gardens was completed in just 13 months, thanks to the dedicated collaboration between our government partners, PCL Construction, Infrastructure Ontario, Lakeridge Health, and countless other partners, organizations, and sub-trades. It is the first home completed as part of this provincial program.

Lakeridge Gardens officially welcomed its first residents on March 29, 2022. The home also houses a nine-station haemodialysis unit, which opened last fall. This unit increases the quality of life for residents who are able to access treatment in the comfort of their home; and it is also available to those in the community who require dialysis services.

Currently 320 residents live, and more than 500 team members and volunteers work, at Lakeridge Gardens. Over the past year, the home has earned a number of awards and accolades.

Lakeridge Gardens Receives Two Prestigious Awards

Lakeridge Gardens is honoured to be receiving the Innovation and Excellence Capital Project Award from AdvantAge Ontario – an association that advocates and supports the work of organizations within the not-for-profit long-term care, housing, and services for seniors’ sphere. This award will be presented in April 2023.

The long-term care home was also named in a recent award received by PCL Constructors Canada as they were honoured with the Toronto Construction Association’s Best of the Best Innovation Award in February 2023.

Both awards recognize the Accelerated Build Pilot Program, which was key to delivering this 320-bed, six storey long-term care home in record time.

“Our family is so grateful that our father is a resident of Lakeridge Gardens,” said Lynn Abboud, family member. “The staff continue to provide the highest quality and safest, compassionate care in such a modern living environment. It gives us peace of mind that our dad is well cared for at the home.”

“It is an honour to serve the families of our Durham Region community and provide a state-of-the-art, modernized, and comfortable long-term care home,” said Cynthia Davis, President and CEO, Lakeridge Health. “Thanks to the collaboration and dedication of the Lakeridge Gardens team, along with our government and community partners, we continue to build a campus of care, ensuring residents have access to the specialized and complex care they need, and that long-term care services are integrated into the broader Lakeridge Health system.”
