Welcome Future Volunteer!

Volunteering in a hospital setting is a unique, challenging and exciting opportunity to help your community. We are proud to involve over 1400 adult and student volunteers across the five hospitals of Lakeridge Health and welcome you to join a team that truly makes a difference by supporting patients, their families and visitors and our staff. Our volunteers are energetic, compassionate and provide excellent customer service in both retail and patient-focused activities.

Volunteers are asked to commit to one shift per week for 2-4 hours. Regular attendance is critical, so please consider if this is a good time in your life for such a commitment.

Note: The majority of our placements occur week days, with fewer opportunities on evenings or weekends.

To become a volunteer:

  • You must be at least 15 years of age or older (we do not have an age limit, all are welcome!)
  • Submit an application form, indicating the hospital of your choice (Ajax Pickering; Bowmanville; Oshawa, Port Perry, Whitby)

Our process:

  • Attend an in-person interview
  • Submit two completed reference forms (not family members)
  • Provide proof of immunity to various communicable diseases (we provide the form for physician sign off)
  • Complete the 2-step Tuberculosis (TB) test
  • Sign off on required documents i.e. Statement of Confidentiality
  • Adult volunteers (over age 24 and not in school part-time) must submit a recent police records check (we can provide the letter required after the interview)
  • Attend orientation as well as role training based upon your placement

Please know that although we appreciate every person who wants to support the hospital through volunteering, we cannot guarantee that every applicant will obtain a volunteer placement. Applications will be kept for six months. Email volunteer@lh.ca with any questions, any time.
