Spotlight Role 

Patient Experience Research Volunteer

Shift: Weekdays in Ajax Pickering, Bowmanville, Oshawa and Port Perry.

This independent role gives you the opportunity to conduct research (collecting data) by talking with patients and family members while completing a survey on their experience on a particular unit(s)

We are looking to collect real time feedback in order to make changes that will positively impact the patient experience moving forward.

The survey questions are linked to patient satisfaction and are a priority within the organization’s strategic goals. Survey results are shared with the Board of Trustees and leadership.

Required Effort: Light moderate – frequent handling of light objects /materials or equipment using your hands (iPad). Standing and walking most of the time.

Lakeridge Health's Bowmanville Site

Treats & Treasures Café and Gift Shop

Greet & serve customers, keep area tidy and clean, sort and display merchandise throughout store, stock coolers, coffee prep and condiment areas, count and record cash. Must be comfortable working with cash and/or willing to learn and operate a cash register and interact machine.

Required effort: moderate/considerable standing, walking, lifting and reaching above shoulders. 

Meal Assistance Team

Shifts: weekdays/weekends during meal service - varies and is available at Bowmanville, Oshawa and Whitby. 

Assist by taking participating patients from their rooms to the dining hall at meal times.  Provide visiting with patients, help set up trays by removing lids, opening packages, and repositioning items, and encourage patients to eat from the food trays. Outgoing individuals are best suited to this role. 

Required effort: moderate/considerable walking, standing and pushing patients in wheelchairs.

New to You Shoppe

Greet and serve customers, keep area tidy and clean, sort and display merchandise throughout the store which accepts donations of gently used items. You must be comfortable working with cash and are willing to learn the operation of the shop.

Required effort: Moderate/considerable standing, walking, lifting and reaching above shoulders.

Hospitality

Welcome patients/visitors and provide appropriate and required assistance to find their destination within the hospital. Gather abandoned wheelchairs. 

Required effort:  Moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs. 

Eye Centre

Greet and assist patients/visitors who are arriving for their appointment and or follow- up visits. Accompany patients upon discharge by wheelchair to their ride. 

Required effort: Moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in a wheelchair.

Out-Patient Eye Laser

Meet & greet and assist patients as they arrive for their appointments and or follow-up visits. Provide appropriate comfort and support to patients. Accompany patients upon discharge by wheelchair to their ride.  

Required effort: Light/moderate standing, walking and pushing people in a wheelchair to their ride.

Emergency

Greeter/waiting room area providing appropriate comfort measures and support to patients and their family members awaiting treatment.

Required effort:  Light/moderate standing, walking and pushing of a patient in a wheelchair.

Float Team

Customer Service: Provide extra volunteer support within either the Auxiliary Café or Gift Shop or Main Hospitality desk to manage busy periods or volunteer absences etc., during their assigned weekly shift.

Required effort:  Moderate standing and walking.

Retail Areas (Auxiliary Café or Gift Shop)

Greet & serve customers, keep area tidy and clean, sort and display merchandise throughout store, stock coolers, coffee prep and condiment areas, count and record cash. Must be comfortable working with cash and/or willing to learn and operate a cash register and Monaris machine.

Required effort: moderate/considerable standing, walking, lifting and reaching above shoulders. 

Float Team - Patient Focus

Provide extra volunteer support within high priority out-patient and day clinics to manage busy periods or volunteer absences etc., during their assigned weekly shift.

Cancer Program

Meet & greet patients, assist patients with the registration process and completion of ESAS at the computer kiosks, provide appropriate comfort and support to patients. 

Required effort:  Moderate standing and walking

Cancer Centre Hospitality

Welcome patients/visitors, assist patients with the registration process and completion of ESAS at the computer kiosks as required, assist ADU clinic by calling/accompanying patients to ADU area, provide assistance to Canadian Cancer Society Volunteer Drivers and assist with way-finding and gather abandoned wheelchairs. 

Required effort:  Light/moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs

Clinics

Greet, direct and assist patients who are arriving for their appointments and/or follow up visits (Breast Assessment Centre, Orthopedics & Pre-Surgical Screening). 

Required effort: Moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs 

Dialysis

Meet & greet patients, assist them into/out of the hospital to awaiting transportation and provide friendly visiting.  Required effort:  Moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs

Emergency Program (greeter/wait room area and inside area)

Provide appropriate comfort measures and support to patients and their family members awaiting treatment; encourage patients to eat from the food trays.

Required effort:  Light/moderate standing, walking and pushing of a patient in a wheelchair

Endoscopy/Ambulatory Clinic

Accompany patients upon discharge by wheelchair to their ride. 

Required effort:  moderate/considerable walking and pushing of patients in wheelchairs.

Greet patients upon arrival show them the change room and washroom if needed, assure the patient that the nurse will come and get them as soon as the team is ready and that you are available should they need your assistance or clarification. 

Required effort: fairly sedentary role with light walking and standing

Camille's Corner Gift Shop

Greet & serve customers, keep area tidy and clean, stock cooler, count and record cash. Must be comfortable working with cash and/or willing to learn and operate a cash register and interact machine.

Required effort: moderate/considerable standing, walking, lifting and reaching above shoulders.

Camille's Closet

Off-site store for gently used clothing and small household items.  Greet & serve customers, keep area tidy and clean, count and record cash. Must be comfortable working with cash and/or willing to learn and operate a cash register and interact machine.

Day Surgery (greeter/waiting room area)

Provide appropriate comfort measures and support to patients and their family members awaiting treatment.

 Required effort:  Light standing, walking and pushing of a patient in a wheelchair if required. 

Water Delivery

Drop in to patient rooms to provide fresh water ensuring the strictest adherence to infection prevention and control measures are always followed; morning or afternoon shifts available.

Required effort:  Light standing, walking and pushing of cart throughout the site. 

Friendly Visitors

Meet and interact with patients, utilizing various interactive tools, friendly visiting and assist with meal time set-up and offer encouragement to patients to eat food from their food trays.

Required effort: Moderate/considerable standing, walking and pushing of a patient in a wheelchair.

Gift Shop

Geriatric Assessment Rehabilitation Unit & Complex Continuing Care Nursing Units.  Greet and visit with patients, utilizing various interactive tools to encourage conversations and their participation in one on one bedside activity.

Required effort: Moderate/considerable standing, walking and pushing of a patient in a wheelchair.

Recreation Program

Complex Continuing Care Nursing Unit - Provide volunteer support within the various activities offered by the Recreation Program staff to support, motivate and encourage patient involvement.
