A new surgeon has joined Lakeridge Health. In August, Dr. Stephanie Tam opened a general urology practice. She will treat a wide range of conditions including kidney stones, prostate cancer and incontinence.

"Dr. Tam is a skilled surgeon with fresh ideas and a drive to provide the very best medical care," says Leslie Motz, Associate Vice President, Clinical Services, Lakeridge Health. "She’s just the right person for our team."

In her new role Dr. Tam will work closely with the Durham Regional Cancer Centre, offering services including diagnosing and removing prostate cancer. She’ll also help develop a women’s health program at the hospital.

"While I plan to have a practice in general urology, I have an interest in women’s health and hope this will be a large part of my practice," says Dr. Tam. "I plan to draw on my unique background as a female urologist to address the needs of women in Durham Region."

Dr. Tam attended medical school and completed her urology residency training at the University of Toronto. She completed clinical fellowships in endourology (stone management), minimally invasive surgery and robotics at Toronto East General Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.

"I’ll be exploring the possibility of bringing robotics to Lakeridge Health," says Dr. Tam. "Robotic technology allows surgeons to gain precision during minimally invasive surgery."

Dr. Tam will see patients by referral from a hospital-based or family doctor.
