Surgeries and Other Procedures
Though we have always maintained emergency surgery, and resumed priority cancer and non-cancer surgeries, we have also been busy planning to resume some elective surgeries. We started with some elective cases the week of June 12. Continued ramp up must be done carefully over the next several months. We will increase the number of elective surgeries as fast as we can safely do it. However, if cases of COVID-19 begin to rise in the region and in our hospitals, we may be forced to reduce surgeries once again. We are regularly re-evaluating our situation and will reschedule non-urgent surgeries as soon as we are able. Please check this page regularly as updates will be made.

Please Note: For your safety, Lakeridge Health currently has a no visitor policy. The no visitor policy also applies to our outpatient clinics. This means you cannot have a family member or friend come with you to your appointments. This is a hospital policy in place because of COVID-19. Talk to a member of your healthcare team if you have any questions.

Diagnostic Imaging

Beginning May 11, elective, non-urgent, diagnostic imaging services that had been temporarily deferred were sequentially rescheduled in alignment with direction from Ontario Health and evidenced-based best practice. Services impacted are listed below.  As restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic were modified, incremental and sequential restoration of elective services occurred. The program continues to monitor and implement Ontario Health guidelines and recommendations associated with service provision.

As of September 15, 2020, full service restoration has been implemented across all modalities.  Effective November, previously deferred and outstanding activity has been accommodated.

Surgery

The Ministry of Health Directive #2 was amended on May 27 allowing graduated ramp up of surgical and procedure activity. Lakeridge Health received permission from Ontario Health East to proceed with its graduated ramp up plan starting June 8, 2020. Lakeridge Health will begin to expand the range of procedures performed providing that emergency, high priority and time sensitive cases are not unnecessarily delayed. The ramp up will continue to be closely monitored to ensure that Lakeridge can adapt to any fluctuations in demand related to the pandemic situation.

All patients scheduled for surgery should, where feasible, physically distance, and self-isolate at home for 14 days prior to procedure as per Public Health Ontario guidelines in order to minimize the risk of exposure and infection of COVID-19 pre-operatively.

Oshawa Hospital

  • Operating Room – Emergency surgery, high priority cancer cases and time sensitive non-emergent cases will continue as well as other elective procedures
  • Pre-op Clinic – Face to face appointments along with telephone appointments
  • Endoscopy – Emergency cases and high priority endoscopy patients will continue with expanded capacity for routine activity as per the conditions above
  • Fracture clinic (orthopedic/plastics) – Time sensitive in person and virtual visits
  • Outpatient Department (Minor Treatment Hall) - High priority and time sensitive cases
  • Colposcopy – High priority and time sensitive cases as well as other elective procedures 

Bowmanville Hospital

  • Operating Room – Emergency surgery and high priority and time sensitive cases non-emergent cases will continue as well as other elective procedures
  • Pre-op Clinic – Pre-op Clinic – Face to face appointments along with telephone appointments
  • Eye laser clinic – Open with some limits of activity

Port Perry Hospital

  • Operating Room – Emergency surgery only, high priority and time sensitive cases non-emergent will continue as well as other elective procedures
  • Pre-op Clinic – Face to face appointments and telephone appointments

Ajax/Pickering Hospital

  • Operating Room – Emergency surgery and high priority non-emergent cases continue as well as other elective procedures
  • Pre-Op Clinic - Face to face appointments and telephone appointments
  • Endoscopy – Emergency cases and high priority endoscopy patients will continue with expanded capacity for routine activity as per the conditions above.
  • Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU)
    • IV clinics - IVIG / Blood transfusions – Resumed regular activity
    • Urgent medicine rapid referral – Virtual and in person
    • Urgent neurology - Virtual calls an in person visits
    • Infectious Disease - Virtual and in person visits
    • Colposcopy Clinic  - High priority and time sensitive cases resumed regular activity

Mental Health Program and Pinewood Centre

  • New clients are being admitted into all outpatient services.
  • Our Outpatient Mental Health, Pinewood Centre and Child Youth and Family Program services are being provided virtually through the telephone and Microsoft Teams.
  • 905-721-4747 is the new centralized access line for Community Mental Health and Pinewood Centre services.
  • The Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) is open, by appointment, at our Pinewood Centre 300 Centre Street location. Please call 905-721-4747 ext 37226 to leave a message and calls will be returned the same day.
  • We also have a new COVID-19 Mental Health & Addictions (MH&A) Clinic, a phone-based support and counselling service designed to help callers recognize and respond to the effects of COVID-19 on their mental health and substance use concerns. The Virtual COVID-19 MH&A Clinic will also help callers with health alternatives, such as coping strategies, mindfulness exercises and anxiety management skills related to substance use, gaming/gambling and mental health issues that are often associated with stress and isolation.  To access the Clinic, individuals may call 905-440-7534, Toll-Free 1-833-392-7363, internally, extension 37534. The Clinic is staffed Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Stroke Prevention Clinic

  • This clinic is closed for on-site patient visits. All new patients and patients requiring follow up will receive either a telephone contact or a virtual visit. 

Stroke Follow Up Clinic

  • Clinics have been cancelled for March and April. 

Geriatric Assessment and Intervention Network (GAIN) Clinic

  • This clinic is closed for on-site patient visits. All current patients have received or will receive a follow up telephone consult. The clinic is now offering virtual visits for both new patients or follow-ups.
  • Currently, new initial assessments are being completed either by phone or virtually based on the patient preference and technology available.
  • Patients currently on the Behavioral Supports Ontario (BSO) roster are being contacted by telephone by our Registered Practical Nurse to follow-up and address any issues. 

Respiratory Rehabilitation Clinic

  • Closed to on-site patient visits.
  • Patients to receive (or have received) telephone consults. 

Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering Hand Clinic

  • Open with reduced services: Post-op surgeries, fractures
  • Continued support of fracture and plastics clinics
  • Telephone consults where appropriate 

Lakeridge Health Whitby Neurological Rehabilitation Clinic

Clinical Genetics Clinic

  • Open and continuing to provide care
  • All incoming referrals are being triaged - only priority patients are being given appointments
  • If you have previously been given an in person appointment, we may call to reschedule it or to change it to a telephone or virtual visit. This will only be done if it is the right option for your care.

Durham Regional Cancer Centre (DRCC)

  • The Durham Regional Cancer Centre is open and continuing to provide cancer treatments.
  • You will be asked COVID-19 screening questions when you come to the hospital or cancer centre. It is important you answer these screening questions truthfully. This allows your health care team to safely plan for the next steps in your care. We have a plan in place to keep you safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Some appointments may be rescheduled or a time may be set for a telephone or video appointment with your healthcare team. This will only be done if it is the right option for your care and treatment.
  • You need to check in at one of the cancer centre computers before your appointment.
  • If you are feeling unwell, please call a member of your healthcare team before you come for your appointment. You will have been given the number to call your primary nurse or your oncologist's team clerk. Call 1-866-338-1778 / 905-576-8711 and use the extension number you were given. You can reach the main receptionist at extension 33282.
