Ajax Pickering Hospital 

We are here to support you and your family as you get ready for the birth of your new baby.

Classes at Ajax run either:

  • week nights from 6:30-9:00 for 4 weeks or 
  • 2 day week-end class from 9:30-3:00 (Saturday/Sunday or Saturday/Saturday) as per posted schedule

Class size is limited to 10 labour partners (the expecting mother and her adult support person).

It is best to register early to ensure your place.

What you will learn in class

Our prenatal classes are taught by qualified labour and delivery nurses who will guide you through the information you need to know about having a baby -- from what to do when you go into labour, to important tips for caring for your newborn.

What you will learn at our prenatal class:

  • What to expect in labour
  • Stages of labour and coping strategies
  • Breathing techniques for labour
  • Hospital information and procedures
  • Induction and caesarean birth information
  • Medical interventions
  • Postpartum care
  • Newborn care
  • Breastfeeding basics

We will provide you with a package of materials that has information on everything covered in the class. We will also provide you with a tour of our birthing facilities.

The fee for the class is $150. You can make this payment at our Cashier Office at either hospital campus, over the phone or online at the bottom of our registration form. Once your payment has been processed, we will call you to confirm the date of your class.

2018 Fall Birthing Classes and Tours

You may pay over the phone using your credit card.  Please call our secure Credit Card Payment Line at 416-281-7248, and leave a message with the following information, your payment will be processed within 72 hrs:

  • What the payment is for (i.e. Prenatal Class)
  • Name of Patient
  • Class Date
  • Payment Amount (the fee for the Prenatal Class is $150.00)
  • Card Type (we accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express)
  • Name on Credit Card
  • Credit Card Number 
  • Expiration Date on Card

Your payment is required within one week of submitting the Prenatal Class Registration Form.

A Member of the Birthing and Newborn Centre team will contact you once your payment has been processed to confirm your class booking.

Class Enrolment will not be confirmed until your payment has been Enrolment.

Important information for attending class

On the first day of class, please proceed to the Maternal Newborn Services department on the first floor of the hospital, in the west wing. See our map of where Ajax-Pickering is located.

  • Please wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes.
  • We encourage you to bring your labour partner with you to class.
  • You may want to pack and bring a snack or lunch. You can always pick up lunch in the hospital:
  • At Ajax Pickering, there is a Druxy's located on the ground floor of the hospital in the east wing.


Oshawa Hospital 

Birthing Classes and Tours

Due to high demand, Lakeridge Health will now offer fast-track weekend birthing classes at our Oshawa site.  These classes provide expecting parents with a more convenient option and are a great solution for parents whose due date is quickly approaching.

The hospital also offers a four-part week night program. Classes are held during the week, over four weeks, from 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. and conclude with a hospital tour.

Expectant mothers and their partners who wish to tour the Birthing Suite but are not taking Birthing Classes can also take part in an evening tour.

2018 Fall Birthing Classes and Tours

Prenatal Breastfeeding Class

Breastfeeding is healthy for both mom and baby.

Get off to a good start and learn the benefits of skin-to-skin contact, how to manage early feeding challenges and how to make informed feeding choices. Couples will also have an opportunity to practice holds and discuss questions and concerns.

The class is offered twice a week at our Oshawa site, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Class size is limited to eight couples. Participants are strongly encouraged to attend with their partner or support person. You can register for the Prenatal Breastfeeding Class when you register for birthing classes or by calling 905-576-8711 ext. 4116. The cost of the class is $20 if you register at the time of your Birthing Class booking or $30 without the Birthing Class.

Babies Clinic

Lakeridge Health's Baby Assessment, Breastfeeding, Information, Education and Support (Babies Clinic) provides information and support to families during the first few days after birth.

It includes a Discharge Class for families leaving the hospital and an Outpatient Clinic for newborns referred for follow-up care after they leave the hospital. Both run 7 days a week at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. 

The Discharge Class provides families with standardized education and materials to give them the tools they need to care for their baby at home. The classes are in a group-setting to provide families with the opportunity to meet other new parents and discuss concerns and ask questions together.

The Outpatient Clinic includes breastfeeding help, lab testing for bilirubin and other newborn screenings.

Kangaroo Kapers Sibling Preparation Class

Prepare your little one to welcome a new brother or sister with this fun and interactive class for children age 2 to 6. Classes are held one Saturday morning a month from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. The cost is $5.00 per child and can be paid when you arrive for the class.

Lakeridge Health Port Perry is affiliated with two Scugog-area Lamaze Childbirth Educators:

Port Perry Lamaze

Our certified Lamaze Childbirth Educator offers a two-day prenatal course on weekends. You can register through the Port Perry Lamaze website.

Kawartha Lamaze

Sandra Carrier, a Registered Nurse at Lakeridge Health Port Perry and a certified Lamaze Childbirth Educator, offers a six week course on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. in the hospital's education room.
