A Message for Our Patients

In late June, Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) notified cancer centres of a variation in practice in Ontario related to the administration of certain IV therapies. It was found that in some cases, the method of delivery of certain small volume, high concentration medications may have resulted in more than the expected amount of drug remaining in the IV tubing.

The Durham Regional Cancer Centre (DRCC) at Lakeridge Health promptly investigated its practice and adjusted the method of delivery to ensure that all patients involved in these treatments receive the intended dose of medication. It is important to note that a small variation in dosing has not been shown to affect patient health outcomes in a negative way.

A small number of patients of the DRCC were impacted. All of these patients have been personally notified by a member of their care team.

Delivering safe, quality care is our highest priority. We will continue to work closely with our clinical teams and partners at Cancer Care Ontario to ensure that the people across our region receive the best possible cancer care and treatment.
