No Smoking in Park across from Oshawa Hospital
The Region of Durham recently updated its Smoking Bylaw to the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017, which now prohibits smoking or vaping within 20 metres of all public parks. This means team members, patients and visitors can no longer smoke in the park located across from Oshawa Hospital’s main entrance on 1 Hospital Court. A reminder that smoking is also not permitted in the parking garage as this is hospital property.
The changes in the bylaw will be enforced by Regional Tobacco Enforcement officials and includes vaping and marijuana use on top of all other forms of cigarettes. Team members, patients and visitors will have to smoke off hospital property as well as outside of the park. As always, everyone is encouraged to be mindful and respectful of Lakeridge Health’s neighbours.
To help enforce the smoking bylaw, additional signage has been posted across our hospital sites. Lakeridge Health Security also monitors the area and informs anyone who is smoking of the bylaw. Fines for non-compliance with the bylaw range from $365 for an individual to a maximum $5,000 for an organization.
