Women in Durham Region and beyond will no longer have to travel to Kingston or Toronto for Gynecologic Cancer Surgery

Durham Region – Lakeridge Health has become the third community hospital in Ontario named as a Gynecologic Oncology Centre, making it easier for women who need complex cancer surgeries to receive care close to home.

“The selection of Lakeridge Health as a Gynecologic Oncology Centre is a testament to the calibre and world-class reputation of the surgical and oncology programs here in Durham Region,” said Matthew Anderson, President and CEO of Lakeridge Health. “This specialized centre will provide women in Durham Region and beyond with timely access to this vital service.”

Previously, women had to travel to Kingston or Toronto for complex gynecologic oncology surgery, resulting in time away from home and added stress during a difficult period.

After being diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2015, Oshawa resident Jane Dimitriou-Currie had to travel to Kingston multiple times for tests as she prepared to undergo a radical hysterectomy. “If we had been able to receive care close to home, my wife and I would have had the healing support and comfort of the people we needed the most, our children and friends,” said Dimitriou-Currie.

The new Gynecologic Oncology Centre at Lakeridge Health provides comprehensive specialized radiation, systemic (e.g., chemotherapy) and surgical treatments for reproductive cancers.

The addition of surgeons Dr. Julie Francis and Dr. Elena Igwe augments existing medical and radiation oncology expertise currently offered at the R.S. McLaughlin Cancer Centre at Lakeridge Health.

“This Centre will improve a patient’s experience. Through the use of minimally invasive techniques, women will experience less pain, faster recovery and smaller incisions,” said Dr. Francis, Gynecologic Oncologist.

“We hear from many of our donors how important it is for them to have the very best cancer treatment and resources close to home,” said Yves Gadler, CEO of the Lakeridge Health Foundation, which raises funds for the Oshawa hospital and the R.S. McLaughlin Cancer Centre at Lakeridge Health. “On behalf of our Board of Directors and our entire donor family, we are thrilled to see this addition to our services and to have more top experts join the team.
