Lakeridge Health Nurse Named to Provincial HIV/AIDS Advisory Committee

Tobin Brown will help shape the future of HIV-related care and support in Ontario

Durham Region - - Tobin Brown has been appointed by the Minister of Health and Long Term Care to sit on the Ontario Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS (OACHA), which  provides strategic advice on all aspects of HIV-related education, prevention, treatment, care and support in Ontario.

Tobin is one of 22 AIDS Certified Registered Nurses (ACRN) in Canada and works at the Positive Care Clinic at Lakeridge Health’s Whitby Hospital where she has provided care for people with HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis C for the past 17 years.

“Tobin is a long time employee of Lakeridge Health who helped launch the Positive Care Clinic in 2001 and she has been one of its major driving forces ever since. I can think of no one more suited to help lead this important work,” said Tom McHugh, Executive Vice President of Patient Services and Vice President of Cancer Services at Lakeridge Health. “We’re extremely pleased and proud to share Tobin’s skills, knowledge and expertise in this highly specialized area of care with the rest of Ontario.”

Tobin received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ryerson University, and shares her time between seeing clients at the Positive Care Clinic in Whitby and at its satellite location in Peterborough. As the sole provider of this specialized type of care in the Central East LHIN, the Positive Care Clinic serves a wide catchment area that spans from Toronto to Kingston and north to Sudbury.

Tobin is a currently a member of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, the Canadian Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, and the Ontario (HIV) Clinic Network.

OACHA membership is comprised of individuals including those with lived experience, as well as those professional working in key health and community services to provide advice to the Minister on strategic directions for policy and service delivery.

Tobin is excited to get started when her new OACHA role begins March 26, 2018 for a term of up to three years. “I look forward to working with this group.  It will be a great opportunity to learn and grow professionally,” she added.
