Lakeridge Health Leads Ontario Hospitals for Tissue Donation and Conversion Rates

Durham Region– Lakeridge Health has received a Trillium Gift of Life Network Hospital Achievement Award for dedication to organ and tissue donation in Ontario.

Lakeridge Health is among the leading hospitals across the province for conversion rates, meaning the percentage of potential organ donors who are able to provide the gift of life to those awaiting transplants. The Provincial Conversion Rate Award recognizes Lakeridge Health for meeting or exceeding the target set by Trillium Gift of Life Network.

“We are fortunate that through our partnership with Trillium Gift of Life Network, more families are having conversations about organ and tissue donation and as a result, they’re providing life- saving gifts for people in need,” says Tom McHugh, Executive Vice President of Patient Services at Lakeridge Health.

This year is the third consecutive year Lakeridge Health has achieved the highest tissue donation.

“Every day we work hard to save lives through organ donation and transplantation, and this is only made possible because of our committed hospital partners,” says Ronnie Gavsie, President and CEO of Trillium Gift of Life Network. “Together we want to ensure all families have the information they need and the opportunity to make a life-saving choice.”

In Ontario alone, there are 1,500 people waiting for life-saving organ transplants, like Durham Region resident, Gerald Scheenaard who received a heart transplant in 2015.

“Before receiving my new heart, I couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs without having to stop and rest and I’d always wonder if I’d live another day,” says Gerald. “This life-saving gift has allowed me to experience the birth of my three grandchildren and enjoy the things in life many others take for granted.”

Every three days, someone in Ontario dies waiting for a transplant. One donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of 75 more through the gift of tissue.

“For those who have reservations about becoming a donor I would ask that if you were in dire need and could accept the first available organ, would you refuse it? If your answer is no, then why would you not become a donor?” adds Gerald.
