Spotlight Role

Patient Experience Research Volunteer

Shift: Weekdays in Ajax Pickering, Bowmanville, Oshawa and Port Perry.

This independent role gives you the opportunity to conduct research (collecting data) by talking with patients and family members while completing a survey on their experience on a particular unit(s)

We are looking to collect real time feedback in order to make changes that will positively impact the patient experience moving forward.

The survey questions are linked to patient satisfaction and are a priority within the organization’s strategic goals. Survey results are shared with the Board of Trustees and leadership.

Required Effort: Light moderate – frequent handling of light objects /materials or equipment using your hands (iPad). Standing and walking most of the time.

Other requirements: University or college students only.

Cancer Program

Meet and greet patients, assist patients with the registration process and completion of symptom screening at the computer kiosks, provide appropriate comfort and support to patients. 

Physical requirements: Moderate standing and walking. Other requirements: University or college students only. Shifts: Weekday daytime shifts. Oshawa only.

 

Cancer Centre Hospitality

Welcome patients/visitors assist patients with the registration process and completion of symptom screening at the computer kiosks as required, assist ADU clinic by calling and accompanying patients to ADU area, Provide assistance to Canadian Cancer Society Volunteer Drivers via parking transponders and access badges as required.   Assist with way-finding and gather abandoned wheelchairs.

Physical requirements:  Light/moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs.

Shifts: Weekday daytime shifts. Oshawa site only. Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+. 

 

C.A.R.E/Meal Assistance Team

Assist by taking participating patients from their rooms to the dining hall at meal times.  Provide visiting with patients, help set up trays by removing lids, opening packages, and repositioning items, and encourage patients to eat from the food trays.  Outgoing individuals are best suited to this role.  Required effort: moderate/considerable walking, standing and pushing patients in wheelchairs

Shifts:  weekdays/weekends during meal service - varies by site; role available at Bowmanville, Oshawa, Whitby Other requirements:  Open to students 15+

 

Clinics

Greet, direct and assist patients who are arriving for their appointments and/or follow up visits within your clinic area (Breast Assessment Centre, Orthopedics and Pre-Surgical Screening).Physical requirements: Moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs
Shifts: Weekday daytime shifts, Oshawa only. Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.

 

Dialysis

Meet and greet patients, assist them into/out of the hospital to awaiting transportation and provide friendly visiting.

Physical requirements: Moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs

Shifts: Weekdays and Saturdays between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Oshawa or Whitby. Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.

 

Emergency

Provide appropriate comfort measures and support to patients and their family members awaiting treatment; encourage patients to eat from the food trays.

Physical requirements: Light/moderate standing and/or walking and light/moderate pushing of a patient in a wheelchair.

Shifts: Sunday to Saturday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Oshawa only.

Other requirements: Open to students aged 17+.

 

Endoscopy/Ambulatory Clinic

Accompany patients upon discharge by wheelchair to their ride.

Physical requirements: moderate/considerable walking and pushing of patients in wheelchairs.

Shifts: Weekday daytime shifts Oshawa only

Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.

 

Eye Centre/Eye Laser Clinics

Meet & greet patients, guide to appropriate waiting and examination rooms. Accompany patients upon discharge by wheelchair when required to their ride.

Physical requirements:  moderate/considerable walking, standing and pushing of patients in wheelchairs.

Shifts: Monday to Friday daytime shifts only.

Other requirements: Open to students aged 17+.

 

Float Team - Customer Service

Provide extra volunteer support within either the Auxiliary Café or Gift Shop or Main Hospitality desk to manage busy periods or volunteer absences etc., during their assigned weekly shift.

Physical requirements:  Moderate standing and walking.

Shifts: Weekday and Saturday shifts. Oshawa site only.

Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.  

 

Float Team - Patient Focus

Provide extra volunteer support within high priority out-patient and day clinics to manage busy periods or volunteer absences etc., during their assigned weekly shift.

Physical requirements:  Moderate standing and walking,  pushing wheelchairs.

Shifts: From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Oshawa only.

Other requirements: Open to students aged 17+.  

 

Auxiliary Café

Greet and serve customers, keep area tidy and clean, stock coolers, coffee prep and condiment areas, count, and record cash. Must be comfortable to work with cash and be willing to learn and operate a cash register.

Physical requirements: Moderate/considerable standing and moderate lifting.

Shifts: Weekdays and Saturday throughout the day. Oshawa only.

Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.

 

Auxiliary Gift Shop

Greet and serve customers, keep the store tidy and clean, be familiar with current inventory, count and record cash. Must be comfortable to work with cash and be willing to learn and operate a cash register and Monaris machine.

Physical requirements: Moderate/considerable standing and light/moderate lifting

Shifts: Weekdays/weekends throughout the day, weekends Oshawa only

Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.

 

Friendly Visitor Program

Provide one on one visiting with patients, encourage patients to eat from the food trays, assist with removal of lids; repositioning of items etc. Outgoing individuals are best suited to this role.

Physical requirements: Light/ moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs

Shifts: Weekday and weekend shifts vary by site. Bowmanville, Oshawa, Whitby.

Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.

 

Hospitality

Welcome patients and visitors to Lakeridge Health and provide appropriate and required assistance to find their destination within the hospital. Gather abandoned wheelchairs.

Physical requirements: Moderate standing, walking and light/moderate pushing patients in wheelchairs

Shifts: Weekdays and weekends varies by site between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Bowmanville, Oshawa or Whitby.

Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.

 

New to You Shoppe (off-site)

Greet & serve customers, keep the store tidy and clean, sort and display merchandise throughout store, count and record cash. Must be comfortable working with cash.

Physical Requirements: Light/moderate standing, walking, lifting and reaching above shoulders. 

Shifts: Saturdays from10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Bowmanville.

 

Recreation Therapy

Assist RT staff in the delivery of recreational and friendly visiting programs to patients for the purpose of improving functional ability and quality of life.

Physical requirements: Light/moderate standing/walking and must be physically able to push patients in wheelchairs.

Shifts: Weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m. Whitby site only.

Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.

 

Surgical Registration

Greet and assist patients and visitors within the Surgical Registration area

Physical requirements: Moderate standing, walking and pushing patients in wheelchairs

Shifts: Weekday daytime shifts, Oshawa only

Other requirements: Open to students aged 15+.

 

Surgical Suite

Greet patients upon arrival and make them feel comfortable, showing them the change room and washroom if needed. Assure the patient that the nurse will come and get them as soon as the team is ready. Assure the patient that you are available should they need your assistance or clarification.

Physical requirements: Fairly sedentary role with light walking and standing

Shifts: Weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Oshawa only.

Other requirements: Open to students aged 17+ (this is a summer position only)

 

Treats & Treasures Café & Gift Shop

A combined gift shop/coffee kiosk where volunteers greet and serve customers, keep area tidy and clean, stock shelves, coolers, coffee prep and condiment areas, count, and record cash. Must be comfortable to work with cash and be willing to learn and operate a cash register.

Physical requirements: Moderate/considerable standing and moderate lifting.

Shifts: Weekday and weekend shifts Bowmanville only.
