Volunteering Guidelines

Before exploring the opportunity to help our hospitals as a volunteer, please review these basic guidelines and expectations:

Our volunteers must be 15 years of age, or older. Please note that we have very limited evening and weekend positions, and so it can be challenging to accommodate high school students during the academic year so please consider the summer program, especially for the Oshawa site.

Volunteers are asked to contribute one shift (usually 2.5-4.5 hours) per week to their volunteer placement

*Please note: Many of our placements are through the week during business hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) so we have limited evening and weekend placements available.  We ask for a minimum 6-month commitment.

The Ontario Hospitals Act requires us to ask adult volunteers to have their own healthcare provider complete our Volunteer Immunization & Surveillance Policy form. This is required by Adults and Student volunteers and is for the protection of our patients as well as for you. Note: Tuberculosis testing is available through our hospitals.

All volunteers are required to wear the hospital ID badge while on duty. Student volunteers purchase a T-shirt at a cost of $5 and adult volunteers wear the smock/tabard of the site "Auxiliary".

We have a very large program for students. Because of the nature of our programs and the screening involved, we are sorry that we cannot accommodate the 40 hour Community Service requirement of the Ministry of Education.
