Locks for Lakeridge

Employees and Community Supporters Make the Big Cut for Cancer!

On Friday, May 29, three Lakeridge Health employees cut off their hair in support of the Durham Regional Cancer Centre.

Locks for Lakeridge was hosted by Pamela Howitt, a 25-year employee of Lakeridge Health.  Nearly everyone in Pamela's life has been touched by cancer, including her sisters, who inspired her to run the fundraiser. "My oldest sister passed away from pancreatic cancer and my other sister Rosanne was diagnosed

with breast cancer a few years ago but is luckily in remission," says Pamela.  "During her treatment, Rosanne was lucky to find some beautiful wigs that matched her red hair. But they can be hard to find."  Moved by her sister's struggle, Pamela felt it would be a good idea to donate her own locks to a good cause.

The DRCC is an important cause for the pharmacy technician. She was diagnosed in 2003 with Hypogammaglobulinemia, an immune disorder that requires her to receive treatment to reduce the chance of infection and boost her immune system.

At Locks for Lakeridge Pamela bravely cut over 8 inches of her hair off alongside her niece and daughter-in-law.  She was also joined by two Lakeridge Health employees, Maureen Dustler and Sarah Suginomori.

Close to 30 employees and family members stood by while Tom McHugh, Executive V

Hair Studio 95 staff were also on hand to prep and cut the women's hair. The transformations were beautiful and each participant received a certificate to have their hair cut and styled at Hair Studio 95 in Courtice.ice President & Regional Vice-President, Cancer Services made the ceremonious 'first cut' to Pamela's long red locks.

The salon hosted an additional Locks for Lakeridge event just two days later at their studio in Courtice.  Proceeds from all haircuts supported cancer services at Lakeridge Health and customers crowded into the store.

"Support from Lakeridge Health employees, whether through events or individual gifts, is some of the best support we can get," says Linda Marco. "Knowing that our own staff believe in the organization, and what the Foundation can do for it, truly represents the kind of family we have here. Pamela's story is an inspiration to all of us and we are grateful for her generosity and that of her supporters."

Fifteen brave women donated over 8 inches each at the two events and countless others came to the salon for haircuts. Hair Studio 95 owner, Veron, also shaved her head in support of the cause. Donations from both events combined came in over $5,000! Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated and made pledges in support of your fellow colleagues.
