Areas of Expertise: Nurse Practitioner, Geriatrics
Michelle is a Nurse Practitioner at our Whitby site and is the Advanced Practice Nursing Professional Practice Leader at Lakeridge Health. She was instrumental in our Whitby site becoming the first hospital in Canada to implement a Nurse Practitioner-led model of care.
Michelle holds academic cross appointments at the University of Toronto and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). She is also a past president of the Nurse Practitioner Association of Ontario. In 2003, she was a Queen's Silver Jubilee Nominee and the Fleming College Alumni of Distinction.
Dr. BlumenthalArea of Expertise: Clinical Genetics
Dr. Blumenthal attended medical school at Dalhousie where she fell in love with Clinical Genetics and continued her training at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. She has worked with kids at the Montreal Children's Hospital, Credit Valley Hospital and Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. She specializes in working with children with rare disorders, including counselling parents-to-be facing complications. And she's a proud mom of two very active boys.

Judi Brandson was appointed Lakeridge Health's first Section Chief for Midwifery in June 2013. A founding member of Oshawa-based Community Care Midwives, Judi has been a Registered Midwife since 2001 and was the first midwife to deliver a baby at Lakeridge Health in 2003. She received her training through Ryerson University's Midwifery Education Program.
Area of Expertise: Problem Gambling
Steve Chiasson is the Lead Problem Gambling Counsellor at Lakeridge Health's Pinewood Centre, where he has been providing addiction-related counselling services for 21 years. Steve has developed a comprehensive model for the treatment of problem gambling, his specialty for the past 17 years. He facilitates workshops on many addiction-related topics, as well as Mindfulness Mediation group practice. Steve is a Motivational Interviewing Skills Trainer, the co-author of two treatment manuals for substance users, a member of the Child Abuse Review Panel for the Durham Children's Aid Society, and is a part-time faculty member in the Addictions and Mental Health Graduate Certificate Program at the Durham College. In 2012, Steve was the recipient of the Lakeridge Health Award of Distinction.
Area of Expertise: Thoracic Surgery (lung cancer)
Dr. John Dickie is the Chief of Surgery and Section Chief of Thoracic Surgery (lung cancer). He went to medical school at Queen's University and did his surgical training at the University of Toronto. He has worked in hospitals in Peterborough and Toronto and sits on various Cancer Care Ontario and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons working groups and committees to improve quality locally, provincially and nationally. Dr. Dickie is married to his high school sweetheart and is raising three children. He grew up in Peterborough and is committed to serving people in the Durham and Peterborough area.

Dr. Benj Fuller is the Medical Director and Department Chief of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care at Lakeridge Health. In addition to his duties at Lakeridge Health and ER privileges at The Scarborough Hospital and Valley Regional Hospital in Nova Scotia, Dr. Fuller also runs a family practice in Bowmanville, is a Lecturer at the University of Toronto and an Assistant Professor at Queen's University.
Dr. Fuller is focused on improving efficiencies in the ER, standardizing performance reviews, professional development and residency teaching.
Areas of Expertise: Breast Cancer, Medical Oncology, Internal Medicine
Dr. Ginsburg is a world renowned cancer expert and advocate, and is the Director of Familial Oncology and Medical Director of Prevention and Screening at Lakeridge Health's R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre.
In addition to her work here, she is also a scientist at Women's College Research Institute and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. She has had work published in many journals, including the Canadian Medical Association Journal and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Cancer Policy.
In 2013, Dr. Ginsburg was named a Woman of Distinction by the YWCA for her work here and her advocacy for access to screening and cancer treatments for women in Bangladesh where she has helped establish a free clinic.
Areas of Expertise: Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Paliative Care
Dr. Aubrey Kassirer is a family doctor with training from McGill, Queen's University and the University of Toronto. He teaches new family doctors and delivers full-life care - from delivering babies to working in our ER to palliative care. He is a proud dad of four boys.
Area of Expertise: Nephrology, Chronic Renal Desease and Dialysis
Dr. Ilan Lenga is a nephrologist at Lakeridge Health and focuses on helping people with chronic renal disease and dialysis.
Dr. Lenga also has a passion for medical information management and technology and serves as our Chief Medical Information Officer. In this role he is focused on promoting standardized care and improving data quality across the hospital. He has a hobby in computer programming and has written and developed health care related apps for the computer and smart phones.
Dr. Lenga has received multiple awards for his teaching and care, including the Lakeridge Health Teaching Innovation Award and the Service Excellence Award.
He is a graduate of the University of Toronto, has published articles and book chapters in his field and is a lecturer at the University of Toronto and an assistant professor at Queen's University. He currently serves on the board of the Canadian Society of Nephrology as the Ontario representative and is also active in the University of Toronto Nephrology Residency Training Program.
Area of Expertise: Urology
Dr. Mathur is the Medical Director of Surgery at Lakeridge Health. He trained as a urologist and cancer surgeon in Halifax and Toronto and began his career at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. When his wife was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease they became global advocates for a cure. He has three daughters.

Dr. Karen Mandel is the Chief of Paediatrics at Lakeridge Health. She has extensive experience treating children with cancer and has worked at children's hospitals in Ottawa, Toronto and Chicago. She is an active researcher and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine.
Karen is passionate about including families in the care of kids and will be working to continuously improve experiences of families here. She is focused on building the program to bring more kids back from other hospitals to be closer to home.
Area of Expertise: Paediatrics
Dr. Marianna Mitchell is a consulting Pediatrician at Lakeridge Health and at the Dundas Medical Centre in Whitby. She joined the hospital in 1995 and was Chief of Pediatrics from 2000-2004, developing the Neonatal and Pediatric department as a regional program during that time.
She is past president of the Durham Medical Society of the Ontario Medical Association and now serves as their Secretary and Treasurer. In 2010, she was appointed to the Society of Ontario Adjudicator and Regulator of the Ministry of Health on the Physicians Payment Review Board. She is on the Selection Committee for admission at her alma mater, the McMaster University Degroote School of Medicine.

Dr. Ricciuto leads our Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship initiatives at Lakeridge Health. He is focused on reducing rates of hospital-acquired infections like C. difficile, and is working on numerous projects expected to publish results this year including studies on VRE transmission and human Q fever.
As new strains of the flu and other superbugs emerge around the world, Dr. Ricciuto is our lead medical expert on preparedness.

As the Medical Director and Section Chief of Nephrology and Diabetes at Lakeridge Health, Dr. Andrew Steele is dedicated to improving the delivery of care to patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
Dr. Steele takes his passion and leadership beyond the hospital as the Medical Lead for the Ontario Renal Network (ORN) in the Central East LHIN, the Co-Chair of the Central East LHIN Vascular Health Strategic Aim Coalition, Executive Committee member of the ORN, member of the Canadian Soceity of Nephrology's Knowledge User Committee, and Past-President of the Toronto Regional Dialysis Committee. He is also part of a clinical nephrology group practice at the Oshawa Clinic.
Dr. Steele remains active in clinical research, has been published in several medical books on nephrology and diabetes, and has written guidelines with the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Canadian Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Trainor is a highly skilled surgeon who did her medical training at the University of Toronto and McMaster. She specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery and trained at the prestigious University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Trainor is well regarded for her bed-side care. She is also an active supporter with the Lakeridge Health Foundation.

Dr. David Wang is a general and minimally invasive surgeon at our Port Perry site.
Dr. Wang went to medical school at Western University and did his surgical training at the University of Toronto. He has particular expertise in minimally invasive surgery of the gastrointestinal tract and abdominal wall.
Areas of Expertise: Critical Care, Resuscitation, Medical Education, Internal Medicine
With years of experience in resuscitation education and the use of high-fidelity simulation equipment, Dr. Randy Wax is dedicated to teaching fellow health care providers. At Lakeridge Health, he serves as the Section Chief for Critical Care and Resuscitation. He also holds the position of Medical Director of Academic Affairs, helping to guide evolving education and research activities in the LHEARN Centre and throughout the hospital.
Dr. Wax is recognized as a provincial leader in Critical Care and Medical Education. He is Assistant Professor of Medicine and Regional Education Leader for Queen's University; Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto; and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. He is clinically active managing critically ill patients and educating paramedics throughout the province as a Transport Medicine Physician with Ornge Air Ambulance. Dr. Wax is the Critical Care Lead for the Central East Local Health Integration Network. He serves on the provincial advisory committee for Advanced Cardiac Life Support with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, and is a member of the Provincial Donation Steering Committee for Trillium Gift of Life.
Dr. Wax has lectured extensively and is an active researcher and published numerous papers and book chapters in the areas of medical education, healthcare simulation, cardiac arrest, septic shock, disaster management and end-of-life care. Dr. Wax has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and won numerous awards from the Society of Critical Care Medicine for his leadership in education, clinical care and international disaster management.
