Central East Prehospital Care Program Overview:

The Central East Prehospital Care Program is a division of Lakeridge Health that manages a number of programs and services in our community.

These include:

  1. Medical delegation and oversight for the performance of controlled medical acts by Paramedics, Firefighters, Industrial Response Teams and community based defibrillation programs.
  2. Continuing Medical Education and Continuous Quality Improvement programs for the Emergency Medical Services in the Central East Ontario Region encompassing: Durham Region, York Region, Northumberland County, Peterborough County, The City of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County. There are two levels of paramedics supported in our community; Primary Care Paramedics (PCP) and Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP).
  3. Continuing Medical Education, training and Continuous Quality Improvement programs for all the Fire Services in Durham (Clarington, Uxbridge, Scugog, Ajax, Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa) and as well as The City of Kawartha Lakes Fire. There are three levels of firefighters supported in our community: basic CPR and defibrillation, Emergency First Responder (EFR) and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR).
  4. Continuing Medical Education, training and Continuous Quality Improvement programs for a number of industrial based Emergency Response Teams.
  5. The Cardiac Safe Community Program, which is a partnership consisting of the Central East Pre Hospital Care Program, Durham Region Fire Services, EMS, all the Municipalities and Ontario Power Generation

We provide education, training, biomedical support services, medical oversight and CQI, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) services for the Public Access Defibrillation Programs that are administrated by the Cardiac Safe Community Program. These Public Access Defibrillators are located in community recreation centres, industrial sites, senior's centres, and shopping centres and many other locations. Each of these locations mentioned above have citizen responders that we have trained in the provision of early defibrillation. Part of their responsibilities includes notifying our program when a defibrillator has been deployed.
