Oshawa - - A new state-of-the-art regional hospital pharmacy will be built at Lakeridge Health’s Oshawa site that will help improve quality and safety for people receiving hospital care.

Minister of Health and Long Term Care, the Hon. Eric Hoskins announced the government of Ontario is supporting the construction project with a $7.7 million funding commitment.

“We want people to have the best experience possible when they come to us for care,” says Kevin Empey, President and CEO of Lakeridge Health. “Our new regional pharmacy will help support high quality care and contribute to our goal of becoming the safest hospital in Ontario. We are thrilled that the government of Ontario is supporting this important improvement.”

 Key highlights of the planned new pharmacy include:

  • State-of-the-art medication distribution system using patient-specific individually packaged medications that cuts down on errors and improves quality and safety;
  • Reduction in the amount of time front-line nursing staff will need to distribute and administer medications;
  • A new, modern pharmacy with the space and technology to meet the full needs of people being cared for here, now and into the future.

 “The redevelopment of Lakeridge Health’s pharmacy at the Oshawa site will ensure patients continue to receive access to the highest quality health care,” says the Hon. Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long Term Care. “Today’s announcement demonstrates our government’s commitment to provide patients with the right care, at the right time, in the right place.”

 The new pharmacy will support all of Lakeridge Health’s programs, including its top ranked cancer centre. The total cost of the project is estimated at $9.62 million with the remaining money to be raised through donations to the Lakeridge Health Foundation and the Auxiliary to Lakeridge Health Oshawa.

 Construction of the project is expected to begin in the summer or fall of 2015. The new pharmacy is a ‘head-start’ on the larger redevelopment plans for Lakeridge Health’s Bowmanville and Oshawa sites.
