Dedicated entrances make ER and Eye Centre easier to access at Lakeridge Health’s Bowmanville site

Bowmanville – New dedicated entrances at Lakeridge Health’s Bowmanville site are making it easier for people to access the ER and regional Eye Centre.

The regional surgical eye centre now has a dedicated parking lot on Queen Street with a new, fully accessible entrance.

“We’ve made getting here as easy as possible because we know folks heading for surgery already have enough on their minds,” said Kevin Empey, President & CEO, Lakeridge Health.

Lakeridge Health’s eye centre is the regional leader in cataract surgery, retinal surgery, and occuplastics (surgery involving the eyelids, tear ducts and face). The centre also treats glaucoma, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

“Over the past few years we’ve really modernized our eye centre,” said Empey. “There’s a new waiting room, an electronic tracker to keep your support person updated, and now we have this new direct entrance.”

Over 9,000 people visit Lakeridge Health’s eye centre each year. The new entrance meets the Ontario government’s recommendation for standalone day surgery services located within hospital sites. It also limits the spread of infection because those heading for surgery won’t pass through patient care areas.

Single ER Entrance

The Bowmanville site’s ER also has a stand-alone entrance on Prince Street which helps limit any spread of infection by making sure people arriving for the ER are seen by a triage nurse first. Now people will not have to navigate hallways within the hospital to find the ER.

“We heard a lot that it could be confusing for people to find their way around our Bowmanville site. These adjustments make it easy for people to get to where they need to be without having to walk through the building,” says Empey.
