Durham Region – Lakeridge Health has been named one of the GTA’s Top Employers by Mediacorp Inc. in their annual survey of employers. This is the first year that Lakeridge Health has taken part in the competition.

“It’s a tremendous honour to be recognized in this way,” says Kevin Empey, President and CEO of Lakeridge Health. “In the last few years our team has really come together to make this not only one of the best hospitals in the GTA, but also one of the best places to work.”

Lakeridge Health was recognized for initiatives including a focus on safety, education and training programs, and a mission to become the healthiest hospital workplace in Ontario. In addition to drastically reducing lost-time injuries by more than 60% over the past three years, Lakeridge Health is now part of a national study on psychological health in the workplace.

“We want the people coming through our doors to receive the highest quality care and have the best experience possible,” says Empey. “We know that when people like coming to work, they deliver a better experience. So we are actively trying to build a culture that people want to be part of.”

To celebrate the award, a new YouTube film has been released featuring Mary-Kim Marrin. Marrin faced a difficult health struggle including many stays at Lakeridge Health. While a patient, she decided she’d rather be on the other side of the hospital bed. So in her 40’s, Marrin put herself through school and was then hired as a nurse at Lakeridge Health.

“They said I had a fresh mind,” says Marrin. “To be able to walk in to a room that first time and take care of a patient and check their blood pressure or check their IV, it was amazing. I learned how to be a great nurse by watching the nurses at Lakeridge Health who took such great care of me.”

GTA’s Top Employers is a competition amongst hundreds of employers. Employers are evaluated by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers in the following 8 criteria:

  • Physical Workplace;
  • Work Atmosphere & Social;
  • Health, Financial & Family Benefits;
  • Vacation & Time Off;
  • Employee Communications;
  • Performance Management;
  • Training & Skills Development;
  • Community Involvement

Employers are compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. The same eight criteria have been applied since the competition was launched 10 years ago.

Earlier in November, Lakeridge Health was also awarded a Gold Quality Healthcare Workplace Award by the Ontario Hospital Association, one of only 14 hospitals in Ontario to achieve this level.
