Durham Region --Today, the Honourable Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, together with Durham MPP, Granville Anderson announced the Government of Ontario’s approval for the redevelopment of Bowmanville Hospital.

The redevelopment plan will include the construction of a new hospital wing, which will replace the existing north wing to better meet the growing health care needs of those living in East Durham. With this redevelopment, Lakeridge Health will also expand and enhance the environment for other programs and services. The new wing will include a new Emergency Department, new surgical services, Critical Care Unit and inpatient units, and Diagnostic Imaging.

“Part of what makes East Durham a great place to live is access to quality health care services at our local hospital,” said Valentine Lovekin, Chair, Lakeridge Health Board of Trustees. “Today’s announcement to expand and revitalize Bowmanville Hospital ensures that the East Durham community will have access to high-quality health care for generations to come.”

Durham Region is one of the fastest growing regions in Ontario with its population expected to double by 2041. The Government of Ontario’s support will provide enhanced patient care through the use of modernized facilities, which will help meet the changing health care needs and shape delivery of acute care services for those living in Bowmanville and surrounding areas.

“This is an unprecedented time for health care across the region as the new Lakeridge Health builds an acute care system to better serve people living and working throughout Durham Region,” said Matthew Anderson, President and CEO of Lakeridge Health. “This transformational renovation and expansion will provide modern facilities for our talented team to deliver care that will improve the patient experience and enhance access to those programs and services our community needs most.”
