New Chief of Family Medicine to Provide Leadership across all LH sites
(Durham) Kevin Empey, Lakeridge Health President and CEO is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kevin Smith, a family physician based at Lakeridge Health Port Perry to the network wide position of Department Chief - Family Medicine. Dr. Smith has practiced in Port Perry since 1993 and has extensive experience in the areas of inpatient and emergency care. He is a member of the Lakeridge Health Port Perry Palliative Care Team and provides nursing home care.
The implementation of administrative and medical leadership based on hospital programs (e.g. surgery, medicine, ER) began in 2004. This and other medical appointments are aligned with the full implementation of senior management changes made in February, 2009. The Department of Family Medicine includes general practitioners (GPs) who provide a wide variety of services such as obstetrics, ER, general medicine – mainly at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville and Port Perry with some services at LH Oshawa.
“As always, our focus continues to be on access, quality of care, and improving the patient experience and outcomes”, said Kevin Empey. “Our physician leadership team and their ability to impact positive change across Lakeridge Health is poised to become even stronger as they influence programs and services spanning our hospital network”, he added.
See Backgrounder below for new medical leadership structure and appointments made to date.
“I would like to thank every member of the medical leadership team – past and present - for their time, advice and leadership. Their contributions have been many and are appreciated,” said Dr. Mark Taylor, Vice-President of Medical Affairs. “I also look forward to working with the realigned team and every physician across Lakeridge Health as we continue to provide and improve patient care.”
“As a physician who has worked in Port Perry for many years, other larger hospitals similar to Bowmanville and having trained in a large specialized teaching hospital, I am anxious to work with all of my colleagues across Lakeridge Health,” said Dr. Smith. ”The transition to program-based medical leadership won’t be easy and we’ll likely experience a few bumps along the way, but I am confident that it will be successful and will lead to a broader voice for family physicians and our patients.”
