Lakeridge Health Announces New Senior Management Structure
Vice-Presidents of Patient Care replace Administrative Positions
(Oshawa) Today, Kevin Empey, President and CEO of Lakeridge Health, unveiled a new senior management structure at Lakeridge Health - re-energizing the hospital network’s focus on quality and sustainability while reinvesting savings into patient care. The new structure eliminates three senior positions (2 administrative) and establishes a new Vice-President of Professional Practice and Chief Nursing Executive, and two (2) new Vice-presidents of Patient Care on the senior management team (SMT).
Lorraine Sunstrum-Mann, currently the Chief Nursing Officer, has been named Vice-President of Professional Practice and Chief Nursing Executive.
The elimination of three senior positions ensures the continuation of a lean senior management team to lead the $380 million hospital network. A number of internal and external (Ministry) studies have recognized Lakeridge Health for its efficiency compared to other Ontario hospitals.
“During my first six months here, I have been amazed by the considerable accomplishments and excellent care provided by our staff and physicians across the Lakeridge Health network. I am confident that this re-energized focus on quality and sustainable patient care at the senior levels of Lakeridge Health will help us seize opportunities and meet the considerable challenges that are ahead of us,” said Kevin Empey.
Planning and Clinical Support Services (e.g. diagnostic imaging, laboratories pharmacy etc…) responsibilities are being added to the portfolios of existing vice-presidents. In line with many other Ontario hospitals, Lakeridge Health will have a Senior Director of Communications – eliminating the Chief (Vice-President) of Communications position.
“On behalf of the Board, management, staff and physicians we thank them for their service and wish them the best in their future endeavours,” said Doug Allingham, Chair of the LH Board of Trustees. “The individuals leaving Lakeridge Health have made exceptional contributions to our hospital and the patients we serve. These types of decisions are never easy, nor do I take them lightly. They are dedicated professionals who have much to be proud of,” added Mr. Empey.
The hospital network’s deficit in 2008-09 is expected to be $10.8 million and much higher the following year if action is not taken. These changes are expected to save $250,000 per year in salaries and wages.
“Like all hospitals in Ontario, Lakeridge Health is facing considerable financial pressures now and in the future,” said Mr. Allingham. “As we move to deal with this reality, we are also amplifying our senior team’s focus, expertise and resources on quality and sustainable care. Placing our Chief Nursing Officer and dedicated Patient Care Vice-Presidents at the senior decision-making table will do just that,” added Mr. Empey.
Appointments to these new positions will be made soon. The hospital will also be making further decisions and announcements on additional administrative savings in the coming weeks.
