In consultation with the Canadian Hearing Society, Lakeridge Health (LH) is working to improve care and access for hard of hearing and deaf patients.
TTY
The hospital network has purchased TTY (text telephone) for patients who communicate with others with a similar device. These portable devices are available for loan to deaf in-patients who rent telephone service at each one of our hospital sites.
TTY devices require time for special installation as well as some
training. Installation and training could take up to 2 business days (depending on technician availability). To request the installation of a TTY device (or to return the device), please call 905-576-8711 extension 2077.
Lakeridge Health and Bell Canada are working together on a multi-year program to provide TTY devices at public telephone banks. At this time, Lakeridge Health Oshawa has a TTY device at the Oshawa lobby telephone bank under the escalators.
In addition to TTYs, volume control telephones for the hard of hearing are available in all patient rooms. In addition,
PockeTalkers
PockeTalkers (portable sound amplifiers to assist with verbal communication) are available for loan (free of charge and based on availability) to patients at our hospital sites who have hearing loss.
Please ask our healthcare staff to request a PockeTalker. Depending on availability, staff can secure a device from the site leader’s office.
Note: Patients will be required to take financial responsibility for the devices and sign a loan agreement/form.
