Over the past few years, there has been a trend to open access publishing. Briefly, this means that publishers or organizations provide customers with free online access to journals or books. Sometimes the entire full-text of articles is provided; at others, only the abstract or the first few pages of a book chapter. Regardless, this movement is helping to demystify medical information and provide access to information that used to be restricted to medical professionals and through paid library subscriptions.

- The Free Medical Journals site - run by Bernd Sebastien Kamps and Sylvie Sou. This site now lists almost 1450 titles.
- Directory of Open Access Journals – DOAJ. This service provides access to free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals and covers all subjects and languages. There are now 2346 journals in the directory. Currently 677 journals are searchable at article level.
