Baby Kaiden Chen was born at 5:22 a.m. on January 1, 2024, weighing five pounds, 11 ounces. Both little Kaiden and his mom, Effie Huang, are doing well. This is the first baby for Effie and proud father, Jersey Chen, who are from Whitby.

“It still feels unreal,” said Jersey when asked about the arrival of his son as a New Year’s Day baby.

“We were having a dinner with our families to celebrate New Year’s Eve and me reaching full-term pregnancy at 37 weeks, but we weren’t expecting him to arrive for another week or so,” added Effie, who went into labour at about 10:30 p.m.

“We weren’t fully prepared. The hospital bag was only half packed,” she noted with a laugh.

Effie explained that “at first, I thought I was having false contractions. But when they continued, we realized I needed to go to the hospital.”

The couple appreciated the “great” care they received from the staff and physicians and are looking forward to their families meeting the newest addition!

Lakeridge Health also welcomed the last babies of 2023 born on December 31:

  • At the Ajax Pickering Hospital a baby girl arrived at 11:17 p.m.
  • At the Oshawa Hospital a baby girl arrived at 4:19 p.m.

With birthing suites at the Ajax Pickering, Port Perry and Oshawa Hospitals, Lakeridge Health is the eighth largest birthing centre in Ontario. Our teams delivered approximately 4,463 babies in 2022/2023.
